The phrase "stock market" was coined by Charles Dow in 1896 to describe the New York Stock Exchange, and refers to the fact that stock prices are quoted on that exchange. Until late in the 19th century, the phrase "market price" was commonly used instead. "Stock market" became the standard terminology when the Stock Exchange was renamed the New York Stock Exchange in 1905. The exchange still prefers to be called "the NYSE" on their home page.
